They said that back in 2015 as well, but IMHO we need to take some of these things with a grain of salt. Especially when the source is the same Deutsche Bank report that claims that Wellington, NZ has best quality of life:

FWIW, transport agencies in Auckland, NZ (labeled 3rd-most expensive for public transport in this study) are dismayed that the study seems to compare Auckland's cash price to other cities' discounted prices for a month of travel. Not sure whether it's true: Auckland transport is expensive, even after subsidy. But perhaps relying on advisors at a German bank based on ideas that lack context about cities they may never have visited, should not be a cause for too much unhappiness. ;-)
