>I tried saving the document into Word XML document and it is huge and not easy to read.

For that, you can create a style such as a citation. In my case, I created, recently, a style with the following:
Font color: Accent 6, Border:
Top: (Double solid lines, Accent 6, 0.5 pt Line width, From text: 10 pt Border spacing: )
Bottom: (Double solid lines, Accent 6, 0.5 pt Line width, From text: 10 pt Border spacing: )
Left: (Double solid lines, Accent 6, 0.5 pt Line width)
Right: (Double solid lines, Accent 6, 0.5 pt Line width)
Pattern: Clear (Custom Color(RGB(246,250,244)))
Basically, if I highlight a paragraph and apply that style, I have a green background, with double borders, indented on both sides and centered.
You can also choose the font, so to have mono space, and you should have something close to that.
In my case, I had to highlight several citations. So, just apply the style on various citations did the trick.
