IE and Edge are two different browsers. IE can be automated via COM, Edge cannot.

A big priority for other vendors is cross-platform compatibility. I don't know of any other platforms that support COM so there's no huge incentive to support it just for Windows.

From some brief research it looks like WebDriver is the cross-platform technology du jour for browser automation: https://www.w3.org/TR/webdriver/ . It looks like MS has some support for it in Edge on W10: https://developer.microsoft.com/en-us/microsoft-edge/tools/webdriver/
