When I Google for "how to find if port 1433 is open" I come across messages pointing to the TELNET command. I tried telnet on my computer (in Command prompt) but get the message that this command "is not recognized ...". Is there another command that will quickly tell me (on that client PC) if port 1433 is open or not?

>Why do you want to check if port 1433 is open? If the customer is not behind a proxy that explicitly filters SQL server, then it is unlikely that port would not be allowed. I mean, are you sure that your problem is just his port 1433 not open? There are a lot of reasons that an SQL server connection would fail and port 1433 being firewall is just one of them. You might simply try shutting down all the firewall temporarily if you think it is your sole problem. There is no guarantee that an SQL server would be listening on port 1433.

Cetin,
I am certain that SQL server is listening on port 1433 because other client PCs of this customer have no problem connecting to the VFP 9 application using the SQL Server. Just a couple of the PCs have a problem.
And you are right, the problem may not be that the PC is blocking 1433 but, if I understand correctly, this is one of possible problems. Another is the firewall. Today the customer will allow me to connect to the "offending" PC (via GoToMeeting) and I want to try a few things: 1. shutting down Windows Firewall and see if it affects the problem 2. checking if port 1433 is being blocked by AV. Hopefully I can figure how to shutdown (for a little while) the AV software (since I don't know what they use).
Thank you.
