When I Google for "how to find if port 1433 is open" I come across messages pointing to the TELNET command. I tried telnet on my computer (in Command prompt) but get the message that this command "is not recognized ...". Is there another command that will quickly tell me (on that client PC) if port 1433 is open or not?

The problem was resolved by starting the SQL Server Browse service on the server. What is strange, that before this service started, many PCs using the VFP app with SQL Server didn't have a problem. But then one PC (newer) had the problem. So I will make a note to always start the SQL Server Browse service.
Thank you all for your help.
