Many Catholics who voted for Obama were appalled by efforts revealed in the Podesta leaks not only to undermine democracy but the Catholic hierarchy. HRC had the same gender as Mary and Mother Theresa but to Catholics, that had to be balanced against the pattern of secretive smelly dealings and deviousness. Normally Trump's crudity would be a huge turn off but he earned a partial reprieve when an accuser claimed he was molesting her in the first class cabin of an aircraft as the first class stewardess (as they were called way back then) hovered. Who is over-egging this pudding, people wondered, drawing attention back to the behavior revealed in the Podesta leaks. Casualization of abortion was the icing on the cake. The US Catholics I knew weighed up all these things against Trump's tiresomely familiar crudity and voted, holding their noses. If this makes them single-issue voters or stupid, then those terms join "deplorable" in the lexicon of those who still don't understand why Trump won.
