Even though Tamar's suggestion is best this might work for you in a pinch.

I think there is a byte in the DBF header which indicates that there is a CDX associated with the table. If the flag is turned off then REINDEX will do nothing and perhaps won't even throw an error.

Try renaming the CDX

Then add any kind of tag to the DBF

Rename the CDX back to the original name

REINDEX

No guarantees, but I have vague memories of this working for me back in my FPW 2.6 days.
