Now Rugby is a little different, if we're looking at old Empire sports. FWIW, the current Rugby World Champions are famous for their haka at the start of a match. This one against France was one of the last of the great Ka Mate (CAR Mar-tay) hakas before they replaced it with something more generic. Shame, as Ka Mate's performance dated back to the early times of international Rugby.

While commonly described/perceived/performed as a war dance, in fact Ka Mate was composed by warrior poet Chief Te Rauparaha as a celebration of life after he narrowly escaped vicious pursuing enemies and was brought from hiding by his (hairy) allied chief. Translation roughly is:

Will I die, Will I die, Will I live, Will I live
Will I die, Will I die, Will I live, Will I live
This is the hairy man
Who brought the sun and caused it to shine
A step upward, another step upward!
A step upward, another... the Sun shines!

"... They ne'er cared for us
yet: suffer us to famish, and their store-houses
crammed with grain; make edicts for usury, to
support usurers; repeal daily any wholesome act
established against the rich, and provide more
piercing statutes daily, to chain up and restrain
the poor. If the wars eat us not up, they will; and
there's all the love they bear us.
"
