I don't think the physical distance is of big importance. What's important is the bandwidth and the delay. Well, the delay will of course depend on the physical distance, but I have seen cases where the number of routers, and their setup, has caused more delay than the physical distance. If the delay is to long, I typically use Tracert to find the bottleneck.
