>> Have you ever attended a NASCAR event?
AFAICS society marginalizes NASCAR as well. ;-) Certainly doesn't cover the airwaves with video of small men in hoods strutting around squeaking "White Power" if that's going on at NASCAR.
>> Have you spent much time in Alabama, Mississippi, South Carolina, or Louisiana?
Sure- I could tell you hairy stories about the time I got lost on the way to Hattiesburg. I know they're there, but they aren't given oxygen by anybody else. Certainly aren't shown on national TV every time they strut around saying their silly slogans.
"... They ne'er cared for us
yet: suffer us to famish, and their store-houses
crammed with grain; make edicts for usury, to
support usurers; repeal daily any wholesome act
established against the rich, and provide more
piercing statutes daily, to chain up and restrain
the poor. If the wars eat us not up, they will; and
there's all the love they bear us."
-- Shakespeare: Coriolanus, Act 1, scene 1
