http://chicago.cbslocal.com/2017/08/16/jackson-washington-park-protest-presidents-slave-owners/As soon as people think it virtuous to appoint themselves as moral commissars, sense of proportion goes out the window and the extremists take the field.
Overnight even some politicians are now saying that memorials to racist scum like Washington and Jefferson in DC should be torn down. Those who cried "Nazi!" against anybody wanting to preserve Lee are in a bind if they think Jefferson is worthy of protection. Now they can anticipate a taste of their own medicine as extremists call everybody else Nazi and Racist following identical logic, with a different set of virtuous decrees. How can you argue, if those wanting to keep Lee are not allowed to argue because they're Nazis?
People need to be careful what they wish for.
"... They ne'er cared for us
yet: suffer us to famish, and their store-houses
crammed with grain; make edicts for usury, to
support usurers; repeal daily any wholesome act
established against the rich, and provide more
piercing statutes daily, to chain up and restrain
the poor. If the wars eat us not up, they will; and
there's all the love they bear us."
-- Shakespeare: Coriolanus, Act 1, scene 1
