My previous Athlon was advertised and sold as 3 core... which of course nobody makes, it's a 4 core with one disabled. Probably some gamer from Nashville was complaining on overheating when overclocked, so they sold them like this. And of course the motherboard recognized this and offered to enable the 4th core. At my own risk, of course. Since I don't overclock, nothing bad ever happened.
