I have experienced the same problem of VSS and VFP (or VB). The cause had nothing to do with the network but with the presence of Winguard (a virus checker). When reading and writing files WinGuard interferes heavily. This results in extereme long check-in and -out times. We have disabled the 'Check all writes' of the viruschecker and all performance problems have disappeared.
