Good question.

It might be as simple as our heritage - since the country was born most of its heroes have been gunslingers of one kind or another.
In the UK, Shakespeare and Wordsworth are probably more revered than Churchill.
Hard to imagine Walt Whitman being ranked higher than George Patton or
Wyatt Earp here.
