>>Of course I'm sure New Zealand farmers are giddy at the prospect of exporting to us and buying excellent British manufactured products(which we don't make).

Despite the tyranny of distance, benign climate and plenty of pasture lets NZ grows quality food so cheaply that in a proper free market it's often cheaper to import NZ foods than to grow stuff closer to home. I suppose post-Brexit UK might buy more of NZ's stuff, but these days the reliable trading partners are in Asia, Oceania and the Middle East.

An example of a reliable trade partner would be Iran that does have onerous requirements like a mullah present at processing. One of the consequences is that all beef and a lot of other produce in NZ now is halal, making it attractive to huge Muslim markets. This dismays some, but is a lesser price to pay than arguing for fair trade from our EU and US "allies" with all their barriers and subsidies. ;-)
"... They ne'er cared for us
yet: suffer us to famish, and their store-houses
crammed with grain; make edicts for usury, to
support usurers; repeal daily any wholesome act
established against the rich, and provide more
piercing statutes daily, to chain up and restrain
the poor. If the wars eat us not up, they will; and
there's all the love they bear us.
"
-- Shakespeare: Coriolanus, Act 1, scene 1
