Yes. He made 2 mistakes: a) not to be a swamp creature with intermediates and deviousness in everything, and b) that embarrassing online communication was leaked.
Talk about Hubris. So many of these movers and shakers seem to forget the basic rule that in email or on the internet you never say anything unless you're happy for it to be published, or about anybody unless you're happy for them to see it. Because they probably will, thanks to hackers, leakers and cutters of corners.
