In your example there is a good chance of the supposed diabetes to be type 1 if going by the older, mostly binary definition.

Even with type 2 I am not against insurance picking up he tab for perhaps somewhere between 6 and 18 months - but why socialize the cost of medicine of those unwilling to loose weight and unwilling to control their diet ? For my taste personal choice of living/behaviour should express itself in medical cost as well at least partially.
