Yes, he had many successors, some just recently born.
The empire is another matter, but the kingdom that Alfred cobbled together is still intact.
As Dragan correctly says (it's his wont) the "latest kingdom" would be a more accurate way to put it.
Anyone who does not go overboard- deserves to.
