>>Yep. The Electoral College failed to do it's job, which was supposed to be to prevent someone like Trump taking office.

I thought the purpose of the electoral college is to ensure that populous states like California and the East Coast don't decide the result. The college ensures farmers and good folk in flyover country (and Hawaii) get to express their state and parochial preferences too. In that respect, it succeeded admirably.

It's not logical to try to convert to a popular vote- since GOP people in CA often don't bother even to stand candidates or vote because they know what the outcome will be. Whereas it's well worth participating in a popular vote. Your post-factum attempted rule change denies them their opportunity. As KG observed elsewhere, it's like losing the big game then asserting you actually won because you rushed more yards. Shame that's not how the winner is determined, but everybody knew the rules and played the game accordingly.
"... They ne'er cared for us
yet: suffer us to famish, and their store-houses
crammed with grain; make edicts for usury, to
support usurers; repeal daily any wholesome act
established against the rich, and provide more
piercing statutes daily, to chain up and restrain
the poor. If the wars eat us not up, they will; and
there's all the love they bear us.
"
