This long time Giants fan (why they call them the New York Giants is a mystery) quit following the NFL when it became obvious that we were paying to watch these people maiming each other in order to make people like Woody Johnson and Jerry Jones richer.
Next step - divorce the NFL
Next step - divorce big time collegiate athletics
Next step - go out and watch some high school athletics in your area. These kids are amazing.
High school baseball is great.
We get ten thousand people for a high school football game here.
Go to a high school swimming meet and watch those kids break their butts.
For some real excitement, watch some fast-pitch girls softball.
With luck, those high school kids won't get caught up in the swamp of big time college athletics but rather will go on to lead productive lives as my two grandsons, who both got four varsity letters, are doing.
The NFL of Vince Lombardi, YA Tittle, Jimmy Brown, etc, is long gone.

I don't know what you call what's left of collegiate and professional sports, but I suspect that we could find the answer in Paddy Chayefsky's epic movie, "Network."
