There's accusations of inhumanity leveled against the Aussies for this, but it reduced the people smuggling boats to almost none. Those processing centers have since closed but several hundred immigrants refuse to be settled in New Guinea or to be flown home at Australian expense, instead protesting in the closed centers to try to pressure Australia to take them. It's all very sad, and ugly.
