That's crazy if you're just transporting the thing.

Would be interested to hear what you think about safe handling in dense forest terrain. When hunting deer, IME a lot of people keep a round chambered- obviously with safety on- because chambering a round is noisy enough to send your target scarpering! Modern weapons have pretty good safeties, fortunately...
