>True. This century a couple of floods happened - probably part of reason why property was lost is higher population desnity here. Still, from the states only New Oreans/Katrina rings a bell. Any thoughts of further differences ?

New Orleans was clobbered by Katrina and New York and New Jersey were clobbered by Sandy - both threats from the ocean.
River floods are serious, but they pale in comparison to what happens when hurricanes drive huge masses of ocean water.
South of me here in New Jersey new islands were created when Sandy plowed channels through huge lands masses and permanently altered the landscape.
Anyone who does not go overboard- deserves to.
