First, R.I.P. John K. I never met him (except maybe in passing during one of the Fox conferences) but I liked and respected him online. From everything I could gather, he was a quality person.
This is a subject where I usually hesitate to say anything, since it's generally the most serious topic of all (passing)
In my high school years, three kids from my freshman year (out of 360) didn't make it to graduation. Different reasons ranging from illness to unspeakable, and all very tragic.
During college years, I attended funerals of three friends....same range of reasons.
I won't get into any debate about whether heavy community participation is a factor. It would be great if we all could live to 100 and beyond, but since that's not going to happen (and let's face it, even if we're all young at heart, we're not getting any younger), we're often going to be able to look at a group of people and sadly focus more on the number who have passed.
