>I remember some pundit declaring that smartphones are basically 21st-century ear tags. On occasion I've repeated that to users who are particularly smug or complacent. Most of the time that upsets them, but I take that as a good thing.

The more I know about smartphones, the more I'm firm in my decision to stick to the old Nokia E5 (7 years now) with 800 physical buttons, decent camera, excellent microphone (I use it as a tape recorder often) and Symbian on it.

My wife had a smartphone, and within weeks learned to hate it. The keyboard app is a parasite breeder, within a week it downloads a dozen unnecessary things which use up memory, battery and bandwidth, and there's no way to get rid of them but a factory reset. Which helps for about a week. We got rid of it and she bought a simple Nokia 216 with just a dozen physical buttons.
