In the late 80ies there was an ISAM file handler library called c-tree, going head-2-head against BTrieve and other C librries but often loosing out to dBase/Foxpro installations. Would have to look at docs or code to see if this one saved data layout in the header of data file like dBase/Fox or needed/generated C-struct info that was needed to be included in the program - second making viewers with other SW less automatic but still within a few H of work..
Have not followed them, but strong guess is market percentage lost the battle i the early 90ies similar to BTrieve and others, so the hint for another backend if security is involved is probably even stronger compared to vfp.
