Unfortunately, this customer will need to be able to back up about 2-3 TB of data each day - so will have to go with LTO7 tapes. And maybe at that level (enterprise) the software is better. We used up to LTO4 before they moved away from tape 6 years ago and restores always seemed good.

Well, that was until I was setting up a new machine, and thought that I should start by reading in the last backup. What a disappointment that was. Although the backup system was "state of the art" with read-after-write to verify that the backup went well, I was only able to restore fragments and then it refused to continue. I tried the same with earlier backups, and the result was exactly the same. I complained, received new units, and the result was equally bad!
