I had it set up initially that way, and I think it even had the feature that a reply to that email would appear as a reply in the forum. But if you go back to my posts from 1997, you'll see how ugly it looked, which is mostly due to the email client (dos based at that time) which I used, where a small battle in the great war of CR vs LF vs CRLF was lost on all sides.

The main cause was deeper, though. I preferred to send my replies in a batch and get the messages in a batch (remember UT Navigator? - that was for guys like me) because I was on dialup, with no local number to dial into, so it was an intercity call... I had to automate my online presence as much as I could, so dial in, do the batch, go offline. It was expensive even so, but at least bearable.
