In fairness, at the start it was recognized that initial costs should be greater because of the lack of any underwriting for the first recipients, but that was sacrificed to the gods of re-election. The truth is that with everybody paying, your teacher wouldn't have noticed the $50.... which went where? Maybe on icecreams, or an extra skirt that year, or towards a nicer house that then appreciated marvelously and made her asset rich in old age, while youngsters who can't afford to buy her house are saddled with that huge $47T deficit while she declares that she paid her taxes so is entitled to Medicare. But in 2012, one of the big 5 accounting firms calculated that somebody retiring that year would pull $150K more out of the public purse than they ever put in, while somebody born that year would need to put over $400K more in that they can ever hope to get out. If you're worried about working homelessness, maybe start with that $400K.
