Perhaps the "initiate hostilities" mentality is so normalized that it's not worthy of attention. Look at political discourse where the goal is to demonize the opponent as an excuse to attack them in a fashion that's no longer acceptable against fatsos, nigs or lezzers. Lampooning "Billy Bunter" now is a thought crime, but oh so virtuous to come up with far crueler attacks on POTUS. An entire virtuous totem pole now is established with plaudits for attacks based on color, gender or political leaning. Attack, attack, attack. Never listen, show empathy or critique the baying mob; all the rewards and plaudits come from imaginative attacking style. Meanwhile the sky is permanently falling because of all the evils of the past perpetrated by "stale pale males" like you.
