>In fact 100mg is an exceedingly small amount, with most of the tablet being carrier and specialized surface, e.g. for slow release. Which is why a similarly sized tablet may carry 500mg Aspirin or 12.5mg anti-hypertensive. Generic tablets or different formulations also may be differently sized, despite identical drug and dose. Manufacturers often use size and color to make their tablets recognizable to consumers or to discourage inappropriate use. As an example, if intended to be dissolved, manufacturers ensure their product is unreasonably large for the inevitable attempt to swallow it whole. Similarly, if breaking a tablet in half damages its slow release surface, manufacturers make it small, hard and shiny to discourage the attempt.

>The main reason why tablets with identical ingredients aren't shaped and sized all over the place, is that generic makers tend to mimic familiar brands to benefit from consumer familiarity. Common drugs like hypertensives that have exited patent are extremely similar no matter the manufacturer, because somebody in their 60s who has taken the same oval red hypertensive for decades can be alarmed if it's now a garish yellow star-shaped gel.

Thank you for your input (as a medical professional, I am sure you know what you are talking about). The conversation I had about the size/weight of a pill started with the sleeping pill he got and I got. They are different formulas (ingredeints) but mine is 1mg and his is 100mg. I have a friend, a doctor; she believes that mine has more psychological effect than a a medical one. She says, mine is pretty much like taking a placebo. :). But as long as it works, on occasion, I am ok.
