Pascal,
You are absolutely correct that the ActiveX controls are distributed with Studio. My suggestion is to refresh the licenses. You may have to remove the ActiveX controls currently installed by VB and J++ and reinstall them. Before you do that though, try the RichText box without the container, and try it on another form just to make sure the problem wasn't procedural.
