I think the global dust storms started subsiding in Sept. and the prime dates for re-establishing contact was around the 1st of Nov.. No matter what happens now, the rover program was a tremendous success. As I remember the original goal was 1 KM and 3 months. Opportunity has 45 KM and about 15 years and Spirit has about 7.7 KM and 7 years.
I watched the landing live on the Science Channel.
