Yes, I certainly did miss them.
One client told me that a PHP/MySQL app - it missed all of those key steps- was responsible for a 25% increase in sales and a 5% reduction in costs.
In 1983 I came across a "toy" called DBase II and gave up using tools such as ADABAS on main frames with a lot more "key steps" that cost orders of magnitudes more.
There are people walking around calling themselves "DBA's" because they take care of "key steps."
Many people still say that they're an indispensable ingredient to a SQL Server site.
I have SQL Server sites running almost 20 years. None has a DBA and things have been as smooth as silk.
