Indeed there may be an "eww!" factor, but then when we think about it, this sort of resource recycling already takes place (albeit in a more or less indirect fashion over a longer timespan -- long enough that such a process isn't as noticeable). If we were to build an off-world colony or "slowboat" starship -- it would need to be designed for self-sufficiency and implement some form of extensive recycling of matter. We'd probably need to employ a more direct form of recycling or other means to compress the timeframe to make resources more readily available.
