That's easy on both counts.
.NET will be around as long as anything else on the current horizon and there are more people supporting .NET desktop apps than any other language I know.
I use .NET about 80% and VFP and PHP for the rest.
Just recently I had to do a QuickBooks integration. All of the example are in .NET.
I had it working in one day.
Give yourself plenty of time to learn it. It's a major paradigm shift from VFP
