On desktop apps - I do not have any specific numbers, but the # of new projects for desktop apps has been declining for years. People want web and mobile apps.
With .NET you can do desktop apps and web apps.
Comparing .NET to VFP is apples-to-oranges, since VFP is a database product with a programming dialect that's a big superset of the xBase language, whereas C# comes from the C lineage.
Certainly using .NET and SQL Server will give you fantastic power. Dating back almost 15 years, people have been transitioning from VFP to .NET/SQL Server.
