The only options I'm aware of:

1) The application layer would need to provide the "LastUpdatedBy" column value. (That's what I usually do)

2) You could have a DML trigger to capture it (though that gets tricky if database applications funnel things through an application ID).


Personally, I'm not holding my breath that CDC in MS will ever capture the user ID automatically - given that they are scanning the transaction log asynchronously.


Almost forgot this one: CDC has a preset definition for how often it cleans up the change logs - so people will often have overnight jobs that read from a CDC log and write out just what they want to their own custom log. I have never found this to be a deal-breaker but I know that some people have criticized MS' implementation of CDC over this.
