Second guessing MS trends is hard, as they themselves do not semm to know what "they" want...
WPF seems to have fallen out of favor in the last 18 months compared to Winforms getting more positive thoughts.
They seem to push UWP a lot, but the Xamarin library also seems to get more traction, as their "not only windows" mantra currently is in favor.
Personally I'd look first at GUIs with some kind of meta/description language, which puts Winforms not at front.
