In recent history (according to Spiegel, which somewhat jives with my memory, but without checking into it):
First rise was with Krim invasion, trying to play down Putin annecting the Krim and later more Uḱraninian topics. Was then [usurped by] and/or [retargeted for] the vocal, populistic anti Merkel/government Pegida groups and nested in that corner.
