>>The dems have their work cut out for them for sure. Frankly I'm glad there are so many of them running -- gives us a chance to pick from quite a few and hear a lot of perspectives. The other key factor here is the ignorance of the American voter - which is a more difficult thing to overcome.

>If the American Voter is indeed as ignorant as you say, then how exactly will a Popular vote make things any better? (Besides invalidating the results of the last election)

..and Bush in 1988 too. The consequences of those two elections being given to the guy with fewer votes is long lasting and far reaching. Think about how the Supreme Court SHOULD look like right now (especially if you count the fact that Obama was robbed of his pick) -- and Ruth might die at any moment.. We have a Supreme Court that doesn't reflect the majority of the people at all. That can, and will, haunt us for decades to come.
Between the Republicans gerrymandering and voter suppression plus what I consider an electoral college simply not doing their job by allowing a madman to become president, the American people have been screwed. The problem stems from the fact that the old-white-all-male conservatives are a dying breed and they simply do not want to give up power despite the will of the people because they're afraid that the world is changing and leaving them behind -- which it is.
Now as for the ignorant voter problem -- yes you have a valid point there as this would seem to contradict my wish for the popular vote -- but as it stands today -- we'd be better off with better representation if things were different in the last election and the 1988 election. Considering what's happened I'll take my chances with the idiots. People can still be clueless and still pull the right lever sometimes - even if they don't know why.
