I thought I would remove the Recent Messages area to allow the screen to be a little more like it used to be. After un-checking everything I see the attached image portion.

Even though nothing exists in that portion, the empty portion remains consuming screen space (see attached).

UPDATE: I see when you choose "Right Panel" it does toggle the visibility of that area.
