>>So with an unmodified weapon 'only' 30 people would have been killed ?

There's been expert straw-manning every day, so no point even going there.

Once law-abiding owners allow their semi-autos to be bought back, it'll be much harder to live stream murderous intent using firearms in NZ, even if it is 30 years since the last mass shooting. But In the age of 3D printing and ingredients for explosives available online, nutters who want to maim fellow humans have plenty of choices. The issue was that we thought we were immune to this collective madness. Not any more.
"... They ne'er cared for us
yet: suffer us to famish, and their store-houses
crammed with grain; make edicts for usury, to
support usurers; repeal daily any wholesome act
established against the rich, and provide more
piercing statutes daily, to chain up and restrain
the poor. If the wars eat us not up, they will; and
there's all the love they bear us.
"
-- Shakespeare: Coriolanus, Act 1, scene 1
