>>Care to explain why you think you were exempt ?

Because we had been. Statistically, NZ has experienced an average of 1.5 murders involving strangers annually, which perhaps gives you an idea of the impact of this event. It appears that angry or disconnected men in NZ are more likely to commit suicide than shoot the place up. So what happened? Just as the 911 terrorists used freedoms of the US against it, this Australian used our cheerful trust for each other against us.

>>btw i don't see the need for weapons like the AR 15 freely available to the great unwashed.

So? They're actually quite good for hunting and pest control in NZ's primeval bush that hardly exists in more populated places, but we'll manage, or there will be exemptions. And don't forget he also had explosives that he toyed with using mid-atrocity before replenishing ammo and carrying on.
"... They ne'er cared for us
yet: suffer us to famish, and their store-houses
crammed with grain; make edicts for usury, to
support usurers; repeal daily any wholesome act
established against the rich, and provide more
piercing statutes daily, to chain up and restrain
the poor. If the wars eat us not up, they will; and
there's all the love they bear us.
"
-- Shakespeare: Coriolanus, Act 1, scene 1
