thanks a lot - that is a very good piece of VFP-science! It was an SQL-rowsource of a Combobox with a conflicting cursor name. The error was triggered then in the refresh() of the form.
It can be really frustrating to have no clue, what causes an erratic phenomenon while there is hardly any chance to debug. So collections of 'experience' are worth their weight in gold!
