The new NZ ban doesn't include .22 caliber rimfire semi-autos. Since you suggested I don't know what I'm talking about, perhaps you can explain why that matters. ;-)

Friend of mine went to Kodiak island last year during the salmon season to observe grisly bears None of them got any kind of fire weapon and they all survived.
I do oc admit that a grisly is no match for a feral goat.
