A family member had a quadruple bypass 30 years ago and there were a lot of complications resulting in additional admissions and surgeries.
The costs would have bankrupted the family had they not had private insurance.
I have seen dozens of similar cases.
Medicare and medicaid have closed that gap for some people but there are millions of people whose only choice is private insurance.

The industry is filling a void created by inept and corrupt politicians. I'd be OK with seeing a few of them walk the plank.
Meanwhile Is showing compassion for some poor schlub trying to feed his or her family by going to work every day really a bad idea?
