You may have found your solution already but may I mention an additional solution - if you wish an MS-free output - is XSLGEN, a tested COM-based solution. It has a cost but offers a host of sophisticated EXCEL-and-other-spreadsheet-formats import/export functionality.

The web site and documentation are certainly not the best features of XSLGEN. But it is dependable, MS-free and generally quite fast and certainly works from within VFP.
