This sort of thing can often be seen in videogames (usually known as "loading screen"). They can vary from very plain "loading..." message (sometimes accompanied with progress bar) to more elaborate schemes that may include a playable minigame. Most often they're used in disc-based (e.g. CD-ROM, DVD-ROM, BluRay) games where the load times (not just for initial load, but also occurring when different game levels are loaded) could often be significant compared to ROM cartridge (where load time is essentially instantaneous).
