(Aaaargh UT has gone 404 again when I clicked Send... so, again:)

The trick was to do a clean install of VFP, because the SP2 update that Chen provides doesn't overwrite the dlls, so in my previous attempts it would always keep the old (wrong) version and then Chen's installer would refuse to proceed. On a clean install it just worked.

Our main app uses lots of ActiveXes (shouldn't that be activices?), many of them from that old batch from 1998. Finding 64-bit versions of them is so not worth the time to be near impossible. Anyway, the team chief decided against using 32-bit version too, simply because it's now equally impossible to deploy the runtimes to about thousand workstations and to instruct about a hundred IT morons how to do that.

But I'm quite happy to use the 64-bit version for my pet projects. It's so much faster and stable.
